Are a long lived reptile that occupy upland habitat throughout Florida including forests, pastures, and yards. They dig deep burrows for shelter and forage on low growing plants. The gopher is referred to as a keystone species and is listed as threatened therefore both the gopher and burrow are protected under state law.
